The refreshing twist was well-written and unpredictable for me, which made the movie experience quite pleasant. Although this folklore meets concoction of Rosemary’s Baby and The Omen (Read: the mother was once in a satanic cult and there is a devil-born kid in between them), but there is still a glorious twist found in act two. The plot of Pengabdi Setan is not original by any means, but it gives me a nice sense of nostalgia of the old Indonesian ghost folklore. The synopsis might sound predictable, heck even the first act was quite “been there, done that”, but come act two and I was sold. When the mother died after two years of mysterious ailment, the family begins to experience a spooky encounter that led the children to uncover a dark, tragic family’s secret. Granted that I haven’t seen the original version, but from the name itself (literal translation means The Devil’s Worshiper), the movie promises to be creepy.ĭirected by cult-hit film director Joko Anwar, Pengabdi Setan tells a story of a financially-troubled family with a dying mother. Pengabdi Setan is a remake/reboot of the 80s classic Indonesianhorror movie with the same name.
Those old Indonesian movies that glorified the local folklore, and this year we welcomed a newer version of it. However, there were few movies that perhaps spooked me out. I am not a big fan of Indonesian horror movies since most of the time its cliche, predictable and right down tacky.
